Candidate Endorsement: Terri Cortvriend
Rhode Island is one of the most beautiful and unique states in the union. Just forty-eight miles long and thirty-seven miles wide, Rhode Island proudly distinguishes itself as the smallest state in the nation, blink and you’ll miss it. Despite our small size, as many residents will tell you, Rhode Island has a lot to offer.
With the historical mansions of Newport, the beautiful high rises of Providence, and our over four hundred miles of pristine coastline and renowned beaches, it is no surprise that over one million people have chosen to make their home in Rhode Island. And while our vast coastline is one of the features that gives Rhode Island its beauty, it also puts us in a unique position as we begin to see the effects of global climate change. Not only does the intense temperature fluctuation threaten our aquatic ecosystems, but a rise in sea levels could also pose significant problems for cities and towns along our immediate coast.
It is of paramount importance that we act now and do everything we can do to preserve the beauty of our state for future generations. As a resident of Aquidneck Island, I am particularly concerned about the dangers rising sea levels could bring to our community in the coming years. And as a senior at Middletown High School, and active member of the community, I can tell you that I am not the only person who holds these concerns.
During a debate, with State Representative Ken Mendonca (R – 72, Middletown and Portsmouth) and his Democratic opponent Terri Cortvriend, it was clear that Cortvriend is aligned with the dangers constituents face on Aquidneck Island. As a concerned citizen, I suggest we take action and elect someone like Terri Cortvriend.
