PORTSMOUTH — Students, teachers and other community members gathered around the memorial Monday afternoon on the Portsmouth High School campus to watch its unveiling and to remember the boy it honored.

When Nathan Bruno died by suicide on February 7, 2018, his closest friends mourned but then catalyzed an effort to remember him; the Every Student Initiative was mainly formed to establish a memorial for Nathan, said Connor Perry, a junior at Portsmouth High School and core member of ESI, on Monday.

But ESI — which falls under Be Great for Nate Inc., a nonprofit organization started by Nathan’s father, Rick Bruno — has flourished to become more than a group committed to the installment of a memorial for Nathan. The young people in the group — mostly Portsmouth High School students — have pushed for legislation to improve emotional support in schools, spoken at community events and worked to create and improve conversations about mental health, in and outside of schools.

Still, seeing their idea of a memorial come to fruition on Monday felt good, Perry said. He thanked the Nathan Bruno Memorial Committee, staff at St. Barnabas Church, Mike Ward, Mark Gurney and Jake Fougere for their efforts and donations towards the tree, bench and plaque at the memorial site.
