I have known Terri Cortvriend for the better part of 33 years and I read a recent letter to the editor that described her as a “Progressive Liberal” out of touch with reality. Let me explain who she is and why she is the right choice for District 72 without tearing down the current holder of District 72.
Terri and her late husband Andy came to Aquidneck Island in the early 1980s and decided this was where they wanted to live and raise a family. They started a business that added valuable services to the Rhode Island maritime industry. They grew the business from just the two of them to several employees in just a few years.
The jobs they created were here on Aquidneck Island and they were full-time jobs with benefits. Those jobs are still on Aquidneck Island today.
In 2004 Cortvriend was asked to run for school committee and she did. Less than a year later her husband Andy was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed after a two-year fight. She was left with a daughter to raise and a business to manage alone. For most people this would have been too much.
But Cortvriend managed all these responsibilities. On the heels of the death of her husband came the recession that many small businesses did not survive; she was able to navigate Ocean Link through it.
Cortvriend has also served on the Board of Portsmouth Water and Fire District from 2011 to 2017. Cortvriend believes that through service you gain understanding and are better able to effect change. She proves this daily through her actions.
Cortvriend is an independent thinker who listens and seeks understanding, she can not be defined by a single label. Her record of public service speaks for itself.
Typically, candidates tell you what they will do once elected but Cortvriend has a record of public service - working hard, being an independent voice and delivering value to Aquidneck Island.
Cortvriend brings a fresh perspective to state government with a working knowledge of our community. She understands the needs of the Aquidneck Island community, Terri Cortvriend is the right choice for District 72.
