Cortvriend and State Senator Seveney Host RI US Senator Reed to Talk Burma Road, Visit Portsmouth Veterans Honor Roll Display

Portsmouth, RI – Terri Cortvriend, current Chair of the Portsmouth School Committee and candidate for State Representative received a call from Senator Reed’s office stating he would be attending the Portsmouth Beirut Memorial Service 35th Anniversary and would have a window to time that he would like to make himself available in her support. Appreciating the opportunity Cortvriend organized a bipartisan working lunch co-hosting with Senator Seveney for local Melville business owners with one topic in mind, Burma Road on Tuesday, October 23.

The event included a stop at the Town Hall for a presentation of the new interactive Portsmouth Veterans Web Based Honor Roll display by Carolyn Evans-Carbery. She explained the developer, Andre Ferreira is a veteran and the database currently includes 956 veterans. Senator Reed stated “This is a great educational teaching tool for teachers, a wonderful way to engage students with their own community history. We need share this with other towns/communities”.

Directly following the presentation, Cortvriend and Seveney co-hosted lunch at the Gulf Stream Bar & Grille in the Melville Marine area. In attendance, Senator Reed, Lt Governor McKee, Cortvriend, Seveney and several local Melville business owners concerned with the future of Burma Road.

When asked Cortvriend responded, “I appreciate Senator Reed spending time with my colleagues in the Marine Trades.  It was a great opportunity to articulate the need for funds to complete an essential infrastructure condition report for Burma Road and the utilities that run under it.  Senator Reed has been supportive of the slow but ongoing efforts of the Melville businesses to expand and grow jobs in the Navy’s decommissioned fuel depot locally known as the “Backyard”.”

Seveney stated,” "Great meeting with Senator Reed and the Melville business community today.  Senator Reed clearly understands the issues related to Navy property transfer and transportation infrastructure.  We all appreciate his persistence and help in keeping the maritime business sector strong and growing on Aquidneck Island."
