Local robotics team AIR STRIKE 78, Aquidneck Island Robotics’ team for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions, finished fourth out of 68 teams in its division at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit on April 24-27.

The team went on to lead a strong alliance in the elimination matches, according to a statement from Aquidneck Island Robotics, based in Newport. After making it through the quarterfinals, AIR STRIKE faced some tough competition and was eliminated in the semifinals.

It was the end of a successful season that saw AIR STRIKE 78 win all three New England FIRST District Events and place ninth out of 210 teams in the New England District, winning several awards along the way.

On May 8, the team was welcomed to the Statehouse in Providence, where the members received congratulations from state legislators and a video presentation about the team’s work was shown. Rep. Terri Cortvriend presented them with citations and a resolution honoring them for their successful season.

AIR STRIKE is comprised of 25 high school students from 13 schools across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. The students worked with professional mentors to design and build a 125-pound robot to compete in the 2019 FIRST Robotics Competition game challenge, “Destination Deep Space.”

The team includes the following Newport County residents: Anthony Abuisi , Freddy Collins, Spencer Dellenbaugh, Wren Hager, Tom Hilmer, Joey Hook, Nathan Janssen, Sami Jefferds, Jacob Kimes, Tim Lopes, Garen Seibert, Charlie Silveria, Aislinn Sullivan, Seamus Sullivan, Rick Blight, Mark Seidman and Tim Sieben of Portsmouth; Tom Dolan, Austin Estrella and Kim Lesieur of Middletown; Alexander Gaines, Noah Manuel, J. Rick Casey, Paige Manuel, Joseph Menassa and Elizabeth Stevens of Newport; and Ella Junge and Eva Junge of Jamestown.
